Hey to keep the white white you might try waxing that part unless you are boiling them with color.
Thanks, Madtatter80, for the suggestion. All I know of waxing is for the batik process, which is much different than what I do (handpainting the dye on with a brush).

just use the the clear paraphin wax not a bees wax it would yellow it and then I would dip white in and then continue on and dip in very hot water to melt it off again when you finish, I used to do t-shirts but I am sure I would try it :) let me know if you give it a wurl :)
I like the way the colors bleed into the white, making a less sever transition of color. Beautiful and very patriotic!
