The Bead&Button Show is fast approaching and I'm looking forward to teaching my class "Shuttle Tatting Basics" which is sold out. The photo above with tatted earring in progress is the project for which the students will receive supply kits, in various color choices. Naturally, new beginners will likely not be able to complete the project in class, and that was made very clear in the advertising.
To make my pattern listings more clearly stated in my Etsy shop, I've added the word "shuttle" to "tatting pattern" in the listing title. I had previously assumed that "tatting pattern" on its own was interpreted as "shuttle tatting pattern", and that the word "needle" was added to a pattern title that included needle specific instruction. Apparently that was clear only to me, so I've added the word "shuttle".
Some folks wish I'd re-write my patterns with needle tatting directions but that would make pattern writing twice as much work as it already is. I know how to do needle tatting but it's not my passion. Be aware that Ankars is not my passion, either. I admire the work of others in those fields, and have given each method at least a perfunctory try, but it's just not me.
So, I'll keep doing my own form of artistic expression. Hey, I have a college degree in art - a dusty old one, but still :-)
The large secret "project" that I can't show yet will get done the later part of June. I'll feel a lot better when it's finished and then I can talk about it! (Spoiler hint - it involves airplane travel.)
This post made me chuckle! Yes, just keep doing what you do so well! : ))

Thanks, Fox! Your encouragement is very much appreciated, for sure!
Deletep.s. Pretty yellow tatting...
ReplyDeleteTotally agree about not re-writing patterns for those who choose to use the newer form of making similar looking lace - needle tatting. Also I admit that Ankars doesn't appeal to me at all. It all looks the same to me and there's not a lot of negative space for my liking either. Good to see you musing too!! Must be that time of the year!!!
ReplyDeleteThat earring looks so pretty!!! :)
ReplyDeleteJane, thank you! I'm glad you agree. You know pattern writing is loads of work! I guess with summer nearly here it's the time of year for musing.
ReplyDeleteThanks, God's Kid - the Bead&Button people liked it too! I found out just recently that Nina Libin used to teach at the Bead Show, so I'm not the first tatting teacher there - I'm glad of that.
The yellow is a fun peak at what you are up to and I too realized that there is a growing number or needle tatters and to me it is like transforming tatting into crochet work as far a directions go. It is not easy to make patterns and some of my needle tatting friends are very good at transforming shuttle tatting direction, which I am happy about :)
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so pleased there are people out there who agree that tatting should be done with a shuttle!! I love tatting motifs and jewellery with beads... Lots of beads but I have never got my head around Nina's tatting instructions!!
ReplyDeleteI always assume that tatting patterns are written for shuttle tatting unless otherwise indicated. I guess I'm wrong! Stick to what you do best. Your work is awesome, and I find your patterns very easy to follow. Love that yellow!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of your yellow earring. That will be a pretty project and a very good way for the new tatters to feel proud of what they have accomplished.
ReplyDeleteI too feel that Tatting looks better as shuttle tatting and I also assume a tatting pattern is for shuttle unless otherwise stated.
Keep on doing it your way, that is what works the best.
Yup, do what you love! I suppose if you're a needle tatter you're more likely to assume a pattern is for needles? We all tend to think in terms of what we're involved in!
ReplyDeleteLovely earring, and a gorgeous pattern and colour.
ReplyDeleteI only write for shuttle tatting I can't quite understand needle tatting one day perhaps I will give it a try but at present this old girl will stay with the shuttle.

Even I always assume that a tatting pattern is written for the shuttle unless otherwise noted. Also it is terribly easy for me to adjust anything written for the shuttle to needle, no changes from the author should be needed. Also I wish more people would realize how much work writing out patterns can be!
ReplyDeleteYou do fantastic work. Don't change anything that works so well. Yes, most of us tatters assume shuttle tatting when they see a pattern unless noted. I agree with TotusMel and have heard that most patterns can be needle tatted (and needle to shuttle) with hardly any modifications.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your feedback, everyone. I think the tendency these days among beginners of any craft is an expectation of instantly producing a fancy item that looks exactly like the work of a master that has years of experience. So, when they don't get their instant gratification, they blame it on the pattern.
ReplyDeleteMarilee, love you patterns and threads. Just do you! Love all that I have seen of your work so far.
ReplyDeleteYou aren't the only one that thinks tatting pattern means shuttle and that it needs to have the word Needle if it's by needle ... I don't needle tat and have no desire to try - I am happy to Shuttle tat- much prettier working with a pretty shuttle ...and though I am a Needle and bobbin lace maker/teacher... I do love my pretty lace bobbins more :)
ReplyDeleteLovely sunny earrings <3
