Lately been playing with techniques that have long seemed mysterious to me, like clunies and maltese rings. Pushing myself to design with these skills helps bring them into my own little world, down from the "interstellar region" of things I've heard of but appeared to be distant and difficult.

I'm finding that I like maltese rings! They're really not hard. I will practice more as time allows. The blue thread is some of my hand dyed from the "Blue Streak" batch.

Someone asked about the sizes of my hand dyed thread, so here is a photo showing the threads next to each other, with a strand of knitting worsted yarn at the right for comparison.

Lovely earrings! It's interesting to learn new techniques. I think some of them you go back to and some you don't, but even if you don't use them again, you know what's involved when someone else uses them.

I can only imagine where your designs will take us in the future! You will always find a way to integrate new and 'old' techniques! I have to admit I'm still intimidated by clunies! These earrings look great!
The cluny design is beautiful. Makes me want to learn how to do them! Your Maltese earrings are also gorgeous. The color flow and changing of color from element to element is very appealing.
I love that clunky earring and the color of the thread is wonderful. Do you have that color for sale?
I have been watching YouTube tutorial videos about cluny tatting. I will probably end up in a big knot the first fee times. I can only hope I will be as hood as you.

Those cluny earrings are beautiful, When we went to Malta last month, I look everywhere for Maltese tatting and there was none I was hoping to at least see some and perhaps but a book in it, I was very disappointed I asked several times it seems it has die out on Malta. I still want to try it, sometime.

Are the thread sizes in vintage patterns the same as the sizes you have above. My pattern calls for 50 crochet thread. I bought size 10 from the store will that work?
Basically the crochet cotton thread sizing system is the same as in years past, but there are variations between different manufacturers. You can use any size thread to tat any tatting pattern; the lace will simply be larger or smaller. However, the exception is in the case of a design with beads, the size of the tatting needs to stay in proportion to the size of the beads.
