Split chain problem
The tangled mess in the photo is an attempt to do a split chain of "Victorian Sets" (1st half of a double stitch repeated a # of times, followed by the 2nd half repeated a # of times, completing one set).
This is not a tutorial. I haven't a clue how it could be done in a split chain, even though I can make a normal split chain.
I am working the split chain in the red thread from left to right. I had to roll the whole thing to get the thread in positon to keep repeating the 1st half. Managed 3 1st halves, but now the thread is wrapped around the core several times from that, and how to coax 2nd halves from that tangled mess? I'm thinking it can't be done. Anybody know how?

hmmm...I was in the middle of something else when I tried it but it looked like it was working. It might depend on how you make your split chain. I haven't tried Marie's method yet. I just loop the thread under and then over, or in this case, I repeated under 3 times and then over 3 times. It appeared to be spiraling but I did not finish it. Don't even know where I put it now. Maybe I'll try again later!
Gina, I've tried it both ways (from right to left, and from left to right). Either way it's the same issue - once one half is done, the way the thread is positioned just won't let me repeat that same half. I do hope you'll try it and show us all how it's done :-)
Oh, my. I can't even do a decent regular split chain! Goo dluck.
I do split chains on a regular basis, but I can't see how this would work! The very nature of the stitches on the split chain relies on doing the second half to make the first half sit right. If you see what I mean.
I'll give it go but no promises!
Thank you for trying, Marilee - I finally did do it but not without taking all the thread off the shuttle and passing it under the "anchoring" thread after each half stitch!!!
There simply must be a better way of doing it!
Thank you for trying. I think I may actually made it work a few times - it's got something to do with rolling the chain itself in the right direction to bring the thread into position. Today was too busy to work on it, but if the secret does reveal itself, for sure I'll share :-) Not that anybody would ever really want to use it, but...can't resist a challenge, you know!
Hi! I have no wisdom to offer on this as I have only done a split chain twice. I did use Marie's method and it worked fine, but I wasn't trying to do what you are doing here.
I have a little award for you on my blog! :)
